Occupational Medicine

Assessing fitness for work

Occupational Medicine is the medical speciality responsible for assessing fitness for work, adapting work to each worker’s specific state of health.

To assess fitness for work, we carry out Occupational Medicine consultations (Health Surveillance Examinations), focused on preventing occupational risks, assessing the impact of work and working conditions on workers’ health, and promoting their health. Under Portuguese law, workers must undergo the following health examinations.

Pre-employment Examinations

Carried out before the worker starts the job or, if the urgency of the hiring justifies it, within the following 15 days.

They ensure initial fitness for the role.

Periodic Examinations

To determine whether workers remain fit to perform their duties.

Their frequency is set by the occupational physician, according to the type of activity and each worker’s state of health.

Occasional Examinations

Whenever there are substantial changes to working equipment or conditions that may harm the worker’s health.

And when a worker returns to work after more than 30 days’ absence due to illness or accident.

Occupational Medicine helps maintain and extend each worker’s functional capacity and working life.

Goals of Health Surveillance Examinations

Carrying out these examinations systematically meets strategic goals for workers’ health and for the safety of the organisation.

01. Medical History

Keep an initial record of the worker’s overall health, making it possible to monitor any future changes related to occupational exposure.

02. Identification

Determine whether there are conditions or health states that make the worker more susceptible when exposed to certain risk factors.

03. Education and Awareness

Inform the worker about the potential health effects of exposure, the main preventive measures and the importance of monitoring their health.

04. Determining Fitness

Assess and issue the fitness certificate for the full and safe performance of the assigned duties.

05. Adaptation and Return to Work

Adapt work activity to the worker’s clinical situation at all times, supporting their (re)integration at work in cases of illness, occupational disease or accident.
